Importance of sleep
By Dr. Kanthimathi
Sleep is important for mental as well as physical health.
Together with diet and physical activity, sleep health represents a 3rd component in promotion of health span. (Michael Irvin)
Lack of proper sleep leads to the following disorder or diseases.
0. Increased risk of weight gain and obesity.(body releases more appetite producing ghrelin hormone while reducing satiety hormone leptin )
0. Can negatively impact on some aspects of brain function (leads to poor performance poor decision making, poor judgment ,forgetfulness , confusion, and memory and also affects fine skill motor activities) sleep is necessary for cleaning the brain's waste and prevent the slow neuronal signals
0. Risk of heart diseases and stroke (increases CRP (c reactive protein) that is a risk factor for cardiovascular and heart disease)
0. Strong link between deprivation of sleep and type 2 diabetes (due to increase in insulin resistance)is found
0. Mental depression , anxiety irritable, and moody (decrement in the pre frontal cortex and affects its work along with amygdala that is responsible for emotions)
0. Suppresses immunity and leads to more susceptible to viral and bacterial infections.
0. Hypertension (sleeping less than 5 hrs increases the risk of high blood pressure due to poor regulation of stress hormones)
0. Cancer (lack of sleep interferes with circadian rhythm and also immunity)
0. Inflammatory bowel diseases
0. Reduces fertility (reduces the secretion of reproductive hormones)
0. Continuous deprivation of sleep for long time may lead to hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that are not there)
